How to Brew Loose Leaf Tea

For some, brewing loose leaf tea for the first time is intimidating.  But trust that once you try your first cup of real organic loose leaf tea, you will never want to go back.  And brewing it is easy!  If you don't have some type of infuser at home, there are a few ways you can brew some tea using things you all ready have.  You can put a small pot of water on the stove, boil the water, add your herbs and steep them with the lid on and then use a metal sieve to strain the herbs out.  Or cut off the foot of an clean nylon and put your herbs in and tie it with a knot or clean string to create a makeshift tea bag. If you find you like loose leaf (we are sure you will) you can usually purchase single cup infusers at the supermarket.  And if you really love it...you might want to invest in a tea pot with an infuser.  They take tea drinking to a whole new level!

General Brewing Guidelines

• Use ˝ ounce of tea leaves for 1 quart of water.
• Use filtered water for best taste.
• Multiple infusions are possible with most of our blends

Herbal and Tisanes: Bring water to a rolling boil and steep for 5 minutes, no caffeine
Green Tea: Pour water over tea leaves just before it reaches boiling point, steep for 1-3 minutes, mild caffeine
Rooibos: Bring water to a rolling boil and steep for 3-5 minutes, no caffeine
Black Tea: Bring water to a rolling boil and steep for 5 minutes, moderate caffeine

Brewing a Medicinal Infusion

Put ˝ cup of loose herbs into a large mason  jar. Pour boiling water over herbs until jar is full. Cover and let sit overnight.  Refrigerate the jar and drink off one cup at a time. Re-warm the tea if desired, over the stove…never the microwave.

SITZ BATH ~ For Postpartum Healing
Boil water in a small pot. Add I bag of sitz herbs and steep for 15 minutes. Make a bath of hot water just a few inches deep (so that water does not travel up the vaginal canal). Pour the whole pot of brew into the tub and relax in the bath for as long as you can. (you can also do this in a small sitz bucket placed over the commode) While bathing you can also put the tea bag directly on the area that is healing. Doing this twice a day can really increase healing time.
